Want to change your life? Look no further…
In which career can you work in virtually any country in the world? Which career can you learn and explore thousands of topics and areas of interest? Which career gives you the opportunity to help people change their lives and improve their chances of success whilst earning a living yourself? How can you integrate into foreign cultures and be part of people’s lives enriching your own experiences and theirs at the same time?
The teaching of English can bring all this and much more as you will find if you take a look at the kaleidoscopic world of TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language). This often has the image of the solitary backpacker going off for a gap year to teach in exotic places but there is a far wider range and variety of situations in which TEFL teachers can find themselves and those who seek a career in English language teaching come from quite surprising backgrounds.
Here at the London Teacher Training College, we have been training teachers for 30 years. Our student trainees come from truly diverse backgrounds.
The oldest graduate was 84 years old but still full of life and a love of learning and teaching. She wanted to teach homestay students who stayed in her home, had lessons in the morning and explored the British culture and environment in the afternoons. Sometimes with their host ‘grandmother’ and sometimes independently. It worked very well as she had a lot to offer her students who appreciated her wealth of knowledge and experience and in return she was made to feel valued and appreciated.
Our youngest students are 16 plus students studying in sixth form colleges and we also train people in prison who will be teaching both fellow prisoners and forging a new life when they leave. We have also seen many retired heads/main stream teachers of state and private schools who have taken early retirement and either want to travel or just ‘keep their hand in without the stress. Early retirement attracts potential teachers from every walk of life. Those leaving the army and military life are also attracted to TEFL as they have often been based abroad and gained a taste for the ex pat community in countries around the world. Our training courses cater for teachers coming to the profession from every walk of life.
For example, the Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language trains second and third generation immigrants to teach in their own communities while the Certificate in Teaching English for volunteers prepares those whose goal is to volunteer in developing countries and achieve a worthwhile contribution.English is taught in kindergartens, language schools, community centres, private homes, companies as well as colleges and Universities by teachers from all sectors of society, both native and non -native speakers, and from 16 to 90 year olds. There is a place for just about everyone who is willing to try. Our free foundation course will set you on that path to changing your life and other peoples for the better.
P.S. Some “famous” ex TEFL teachers include:
• Russel Brand
• James Joyce
• JK Rowling
• Nick Hornby
• Bob Geldof
• Jeremy Hunt MP
